    • Major disappointment, not a five star hotel

To celebrate my wife's 60th birthday we visited Mauritius (6 adults plus two children), we booked what we believed to be a five star resort, unfortunately the Heritage Awali Golf &Spa Resort falls very short of this rating, at best I would describe it as a three star resort with delusions of grandeau. On arrival at 2130 hrs (after 15 hours travelling) the staff could not have been more inefficient if they tried, they insisted on us answering loads of ridiculous questions on an i-pad rather than concentrating on getting us to our rooms so that we could freshen up for a meal, the end result was that we missed the meal as the check in process took 45 minutes. The rooms are described as"Delux" but are in fact very basic, they are in real need of refurbishment. I booked (directly with the resort) a family room for 2 adults plus 2 children, on arrival it transpired that all the rooms were the same, a double bed was provided for the adults with the children expected to sleep on a cramped settee bed. When I complained the management were totally unhelpful and insisted on extra payment to transfer the family into a pair of adjoining rooms even though it was their error. At least 4 hours on the day after arriving were spent trying to resolve the issue with a obstinate deputy manager. The restaurants were very basic, the Savana buffet restaurant was awful, avoid at all costs, the Zafarani Indian restaurant was the best, the others were average. As I booked directly with the resort I received confirmation in writing that golf fees were included, when booking golf I was informed the fees were not included, another hour of arguing, the management were incapable of admitting they were wrong, when I later realised the fees were only 10 for 18 holes I could not believe the penny pinching attitude of the managers. Another example of penny pinching is that the staff were not allowed to leave a bottle of wine on the table with dinner, instead you had to constantly call the waiter for a refill which was ridiculous. On a positive note, the staff were very friendly but the service was far too slow, you could wait over 1 hour for a snack and drinks would often take 20 to 30 minutes to arrive. I would not recommend this resort, it is too expensive for very basic rooms, food and service. It also has very limited facilities for children even though it claims to be family resort. The management team need to seriously improve their customer skills, they seem to have the attitude that they are always right and the customer is an inconvenience.

Myself and my new husband visited here for 2 weeks at the end of May for our honeymoon. Staff checked us in quickly with a welcome drink and showed us around the facilities and to our room. We had a problem with our bath twice in the 2 weeks and the maintenance team sorted it immediately. Our room was located on the ground floor by the adults pool area. This was a perfect location as was close to all the facilities. Overall the room was clean. Separate shower and bath. Rooms turned down every night as well as serviced in the day. Fridge stocked daily. Bed very comfy and lots of storage for clothes and suitcases. Food was to an excellent standard. Buffet breakfast with good hot and cold choices. Lunch was menus in 2 restaurants which was fantastic. Different themed buffet each night for dinner or the a la cartes. The infinity blue was our favourite (Seafood), Indian was delicious and these were our favourite 2 restaurants. You must book the restaurants as soon as you arrive to get to try them all. The Italian was terribly busy - we didn't get our starters for an hour. The steak at the steakhouse was not to a good standard but the lunches here are wonderful. The spa and sports facilities are well worth a visit. We had a welcome couples massage to use I the first 2 days of our stay. This was to a very high standard so we booked further treatments each. even if you do not want a treatment, you can use the sauna/pool areas for free during your stay - good to do on a rainy day. We only used the gym once but went on all 3 bike tours, which are very well organised and very friendly staff. I did the golf introductory lesson which is worth giving a go. Even if you do not play golf, there are regular shuttles and if you want to go off site then they do lovely lunches. If you want to book trips out but do not want a guided tour of sites then use the hotel taxi service. For approx. 70 a day you can have your own driver. This was much more cost effective than some rep trips and even the taxi service with the rep. The service at the bars were always excellent and drinks quality to a good standard. We booked a buggy to their nature reserve, which we loved and was great fun for a few hours. We also paid extra for The Chateau, this is well worth a visit for a special occasion. Thank you so much to everyone at the hotel for giving us an unforgettable honeymoon. We would certainly return to Mauritius and highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit.

    • My first bad review

I will start of with the positives about this resort and there are some redeeming features. Such as some members of staff who were very attentive and helpful (however this seemed roughly a 50/50 split depending on who was serving you.) The pool area and general surroundings were lovely so the setting is very picturesque. On the whole I did enjoy my trip but that was more to do with making the most of the time as their was no point in spending the holiday complaining. So where the resort massively let itself down was the following; When we arrived at the resort (around 9:30pm we were quickly greeted and told the restaurants would be closing at 10:30, this would not have been a problem however the staff insisted we filled out irrelevant questions before we could see our room or go for dinner, questions such as 'what was your flight number, what flight are you going home on, and many other questions that really could have waited until the morning or ideally not be asked at all. By the time we finished the quiz and were shown to our rooms we had missed dinner, also my brother and his children's 'family room' was essentially a double bed an a sofa bed, hardly suitable for a 6 and 8 year old to share with their father. The rooms are described as 'delux' and I have been lucky enough to stay in many 5 star hotels and resorts, these 'delux' rooms do not live up to the standard I have seen before, there is nothing 'delux' about them, they are as basic as what you would expect to find in a standard hotel room in an average hotel in Spain. The mini bar is poorly stocked and for an all inclusive resort I would expect a lot more. The room service is not included which again is something I have not encountered at all inclusive resorts before. My parents and brother had golf included in their package (confirmed in writing months ago) however the hotel then back tracked on the deal and said they could no longer offer/honour what we paid for and compromised on 9 holes when it was previously confirmed they would get 18. The staff at one stage served my 8 year old niece a Malibu and Coke which luckily she realised quickly her drink was 'funny', we found it less funny as we had already that day over heard another Muslim family complain their child had been given an alcoholic drink even though they asked for their drinks to be given in disposable cups so they did not have any contact with alcohol. These kind of mistakes along with at times very slow service all contribute to my bad review of this place. I would not recommend staying here as I believe there is so much more you could get for your money if you shop around. Oh last thing the cherry on top, when I went to check out there was a bill for 8 games of pool charged to my room... 8 games we did not play. Avoid and shop around is my tip for this place. I will end by saying there were some members of staff who were lovely and its a shame the higher management and facilities did not match the high standard being implemented by some of the ground staff.

After spending 3 nights at Heritage Awali, we were a bit disappointed as we were not treated like clients compare to the tourists. The level of service is not up to the standard of a 5 star hotel. Check in was a bit long as we were a big group and to our surprise, the rooms were not even ready at 4pm. I got a nice room with a great view (in front of the main pool and close to the reception/restaurants). Housekeeping was awesome, the lady who cleaned my room was good at her job. She even washed the baby's bottles and folded all the clothes and put them away in the drawers. We were very impressed by how clean the room was after we came back from breakfast. Service at the restaurants was very disappointing though. We were invisible to the waiters. We had to ask them several times but it didn't make much difference. We had to wait 30-45 minutes for a drink! and for the food....sometimes we had to wait 1hr or more. The front desk staff was rude. He even made a racist comment about me to one of his colleague and I was standing right there. I was really shocked and didn't say anything. I sent an email to his manager in regards to that but no response until today. I think the staffs at the reception should at least have a certain level of respect towards the clients and have good customer service. Because of some staffs the standard of the hotel is not as we expected. The food was not good at the restaurant Savana. There was not many variety and we were not satisfied. They didn't replace food when it was finished and service was very slow. Food by the pool was actually better...pancakes, waffles, burgers, hot dogs and paninis were good. Overall stay was okay...the kids loved the heated pool and unlimited drinks. We all got a complimentary 45 min massage as well. That was a great gift from the hotel. I haven't seen complimentary massages in many hotels in Mauritius. Can be recommended if they improve the level of service towards Mauritians.

Although the service was slow at times, the attitude of the staff made the wait worthwhile, Rahim was great as were all the staff. The lady who did our room, Aisha I think was also extremely efficient and friendly. The barman at Infinity Blue knew what our drinks were after just one visit.
