    • Interesting building, great views, sub-standard collection

I'd read about the persecution of the Cathars, and the Albigensian Crusade, which seems to be a case of widespread massacres in pursuit of a major land seizure, cloaked in intolerance of religious differences. The Cathars didin't believe in building churches or a formal priesthood (the Catholic prelates of the time were a pretty poor example) and when the Cathars were vanquished, the new Albi cathedral and neighbouring bishops' palace were huge brick statements saying "we're in charge now so come to our church or else". Of course the winners write the history books so I'm sure French ones tell quite a different tale. Anyway, we felt the 10 Euro entrance fee for the Toulouse Lautrec museum rather steep given the paucity of good exhibits inside. I never even found out if photography was allowed inside; I had a good camera with me but there was nothing I wanted to photograph. We wished we'd instead just walked around the gardens, free and with lovely views.

We took the audio tour through the museum, and it was well worth it! The building and the surrounding gardens are all extraordinary, as is the location right on the river, with boats going by next to two bridges, and being right next door to the Cathedral. We spent a very delightful 2 1/2 hours exploring and learning much about the artist and his times. The photographs of the man himself were intriguing!

We took the train from Toulouse to Albi to visit the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum. It was terrific! The audio tour guided us through Henri Toulouse-Lautrecs development, from his love of horses early in his career to his captivating posters and book covers in his heyday. There were many examples of his process from pencil sketches to final product, with the audio explaining the various subtexts in each sketch, painting or poster. The lighting in the museum is not ideal, but the volume of HTLs work is expansive, and the backstory for each piece is intriguing and enlightening. In addition to the museum, the garden is spectacular. If you go, make sure you plan for a good two hours to explore the world of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.

Did not really know much about the artist or his work but thought we would have a look while we were there. Pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the visit.

We drove over 2 hours from where we have family living in France having looked online re costs for the museum. They suggest purchasing from the machine which we did and but walking through the inside entrance to the helpdesk they display age13 and under is free. I asked for 1 ticket to be reimbursed as it wasnt clear and the only option on the machine was adult to be told non. The man at the desk was rude and unhelpful and when he called his supervisor she was also unhelpful and inflexible. Having visited France for the last 30 years I am sad to say this is not untypical but still disappointing as the museum was excellent and I was happy to pay the going rate- they should be less ambiguous and have a bit more flexibility- customer service is not their strong point!
