We really thought that Hotel Helios was a great place to stay. The front desk, pool and breakfast people could not have been better. The public facilities and views are fantastic. The sleeping room was nice but small while the terrace very spacious. The only drawback is the tiny bathroom and its shortcomings. Minimal space, few hooks or shelves and no soap holder in the shower. We could put up with the tiny bathroom but others should book with complete knowledge

    • Outdated hotel with nice pool

The only good thing about this hotel was the pool area and views. The rooms were dated and very tiny. We were lucky enough to have room 5 which had a huge balcony with a superb view (our balcony was larger than our room!) Everything else about this hotel was outdated. It needs a huge makeover. The breakfast quality was below average. After day 1 we opted to eat out. Not only was the food average, but the breakfast room was old and smelt stale. If you are not fussed about the room quality, I would stay here just for access to the pool which is complimentary for hotel guests (compared to other hotels in the area which charge a fee for use of the sun beds). This and the views are are probably the only positive about this hotel

We stayed here for five nights and couldnt have been happier. The position of the hotel is fantastic, right on the promenade with fantastic views of the sea and Santa Margherita. Our room and balcony were on the small side but very clean and adequate. The pool was great as was the restaurant. We ate at the hotel restaurant three nights and found the food as good if not better than the local eateries. All the staff are friendly and welcoming especially the two Monicas at reception, Roberto the barman and Mario who helped us at breakfast and the bar. Would highly recommend Hotel Helios and will definitely stay here if ever back in Santa Margherita Ligure.

Old but clean and has a great view. In the center, very convenient . We come for the weekend, it was more than great to spend one night. It also has car parking. Even when the Park was full they provided us another parking spot not very far.

There were moments here when I felt like I was in a James Bond movie, between the spectacular views from our balcony and the glamorous ambience of the pool and beach area. Santa Margherita is a charming town, ideal for exploring the Cinque Terre (a pleasant train ride of less than an hour away, and the train station is right across the street), Portofino and Camogli (the former is within walking distance; we took scenic boat rides to both), and Rapallo and Chiavari (only 5 and 15 minutes away by train). It's true, our room (number 10) was small but it wasn't a problem; we spent most of time at the hotel on the balcony (which was bigger than the room). Breakfast was a delicious buffet spread, available between 8 and 10. We didn't take advantage of the restaurant but enjoyed nightcaps at the bar, which offers indoor and outdoor seating. The saltwater pool was first rate and the couple of times I used it during our 4-night stay in mid-September, I had it all to myself. Staffers were courteous and helpful, especially the two Monicas at the front desk. I don't usually stay at hotels--I prefer a more intimate B&B experience--but I think the atmosphere of a grand hotel like Helios is ideally suited to this resort area. The rate was 250 euro per night (about $300), which is way more than I usually spend but I found it a bargain compared to the other waterfront hotels. If you're arriving in Genoa by plane, I would recommend asking the hotel to arrange pickup by car service; for 97 euro we were greeted by friendly Vincenzo, who responded to my limited Italian with grace and provided a welcome commentary on the passing scenery. The Monicas cheerfully made all of my requested dinner reservations and offered other useful suggestions, too. Frankly, I was a little apprehensive on account of some of the previous comments here and elsewhere but I'm happy to say that I found Helios a delight in every way.
