    • Stay here but NOT on a Monday night

      Reviewed 09 September 2019

Unbeknownst to me, my husband had extended our trip to Yass by adding a couple of nights in Canberra. In order to forestall my complaints that we have been to Canberra a LOT this year, he had booked at Hotel Kurrajong. These are historic, protected buildings which have been restored and modernised: some of it looks good, some looks a bit strange. I'm not sure about mustard coloured walls or dark green in a poorly light basement. This is where PM Chifley, you know, the Light on the Hill guy, lived during his years in parliament. My husband had chosen a room with 2 beds, thinking they'd both be double. Not so. My husband loves a deal and the rate was very, very good. However it has been a while since I slept in a truly single bed. Not keen. The room was narrow in width but it had everything: TV articulated from the wall, a bar area, desk, good space for bags. The bathroom was delightful with the most excellent shower. Only most minor of quibbles, whoever did the prep for the room didn't check that everything - little things like sugar- was fully stocked. However, the staff was delightful and dealt immediately with my requests. There is parking for $15 per night in a car park out the back or at the front of the hotel. Display your sticker or your car will be towed away. We had a couple of meals in the downstairs in the Bar and Grill, as well as having room service in the very early morning. It was all good. But listen, the truly terrific about this place is its location in relation to Canberra's best restaurants, unless you're dumb like us and stay on a Monday night (when the good restaurants are all closed). Since the opening of the new parliament house many of the great restaurants have moved from Manuka and Kingston to Barton. Just around the corner from the Kurrajong Hotel are some of Canberra's finest restaurants, including Ottoman, Lilotang, Chairman and Yip. The suburb of Barton itself is undergoing changes with Doma developers refurbishing the Brassey Hotel and launching the very stylish Little National Hotel and the five star Realm Hotel with its Buvette Bistro. It's the Realm for us with our next Canberra stay. Due to all the levels I am not sure that this is a great place for people with mobility issues.

Don't go past this one without taking a long look at it. Excellent service, beautiful ambience, great location, easy parking, top breakfast, great coffee, amazingly helpful friendly staff, bright cheerful impeccably clean comfortable room (if a bit on the small side) - but hey!...that's the way they built 'em in those days!).

Hotel rooms were nice, but the service offered in the hotel was very poor. Parking at the hotel can be challenging. The hotel were unable to offer subtitles on the TV in our room, confirm whether we had paid for breakfast, and replenish the coffee in the room. The hotel itself is nice

    • Excellent service and lovely accomodation

Exceptional service, friendly staff and well appointed, clean rooms. The staff went above and beyond to look after a disabled colleague who was also staying at the hotel, very impressed with their professionalism and care. Well done. Definitely recommend this hotel.
