Stopped and questioned for about an hour just inside the gates. Long walk from car. Buy tickets for lake, then tickets for bus. We had a car but that would have cost a fortune. But then we were limited to where the bus stopped and when it came back to pick us up. Lake is beautiful but all fenced off - no animals would be able to get to it. Not natural - only a boardwalk around the edges. We thought we would be able to picnic on the grasslands and just enjoy the serenity, instead, just another "Disneyland" as one guide described such fake places. So disappointed...

"Sayram Lake (Chinese: ; pinyin: Silm h) is located in the Bortala Prefecture near the Tian Shan Mountains, Xinjiang, China. In the Kazakh language Sayram means 'blessing'. It is also known as Santai Haizi. It is the largest (458 km) alpine lake in Xinjiang and also the highest (2,070 m)." This is at least one day trip if you want to drive around the lake. Many lodging and dinning place near the main entry, but, not inside the park, you may want to bring some snacks if you want stay inside the park for a day long. Beautiful lake, worth a trip.

Sayram Lake is located in the Bortala Prefecture near the Tian Shan Mountains in Xinjiang. In Kazakh language Sayram means 'blessing'. It is also known as Santai Haizi or as Atlantic last teardrop. It is the largest alpine lake in Xinjiang and also the highest surrounded by grasslands, snow cap Tian Shan mountain and the endless blue sky. The water is calm with gentle waves and is turquoise blue in colour. Walking along the lake, listening to the gentle sound of the wave and the cold wind blowing against your face in a meditative state of mind is great. Given its proximity to Kazakhstan, youre bound to run into quite a few Kazakh men riding their horses trying to get you ride the horse on the grassland or to stay in their yurt for a night. The grassland is vast as it was autumn it looked rather bare, be careful of the sheep and horse dungs on the walking path as it is obvious without much grass left. An added bonus the road that passes through fruit valley (Guozigou) between Yining and Sayram Lake boasts one of the most incredible bridges, the entire road is a feast of visual beauty.

Beautiful surprise when we came upon this lake, was not expecting it. Something special about the atmosphere. So happy we found it. Also able to buy fresh fish from this crystal clear lake and had our hotel cook for us that evening. Another great experience in Xinjiang.

Wonderful place! Very quiet! still not very touristic! You can rent bikes on the spot and cycle around (however the whole lake is around 100km). it is 30 RMB per bike per day. People living there are very helpful - you can easily find a place to stay (yurt). Highly recommended place to stop for a while!
