    • Smashing Resort for Relaxation and Great Food

      4.0
      Reviewed 29 August 2019

We arrived at approximately 10pm following a long day of travel and our first impressions of the Beachcomber weren't particularly good as the registration process was a bit haphazard and the reception area is multi-level soulless and lacking in warmth and charm. We did receive a welcome drink and the luggage service was prompt and courteous. After a good night's sleep our impression of the resort quickly improved. Our beachfront room was modern, comfortable and spacious with tea & coffee making facilities and everything you would expect from a modern 4* establishment including good free wifi and USB charging sockets. As we had a ground floor room by the beach it comes with a tiled terraced area and a small private walled and gated sandy area for sunbathing. The view across the lagoon through the palm trees is delightful and with the constant marine traffic in the bay there is always something to watch. There are a number of English TV channels showing films, sport and news if needed. The restaurant and large pool area are the focal points of the property and are wonderful. The pools are large and are tiled in non-traditional slate which looks really classy (There are a few loose ones which the maintenance people were trying to re-attach). The restaurant is split level with some tables right by the pool and a number of resident dogs and cats wander about the tables after scraps - this is either a pest or charming depending on your attitude to animals - we loved it as they are all very people oriented and are more like hotel pets than feral creatures. I was expecting standard 4* buffet food but this is much more than that. The standard was excellent throughout our entire stay and the chefs are all obviously very proud of what they achieve here. One minor issue was some of the dishes were a bit cold once they'd been in the serving receptacles for a while but apart from that we had no complaints at all. One thing to note is that chips/fries are only served at lunch so if you are on a HB basis as we were you won't see a chip. The restaurant staff are all extremely professional and attentive with nothing too much trouble. There is plenty of entertainment options throughout the day but there is no pressure to join in if you just want to relax by the pool. As we were half board no drinks were included in our package and we soon learned that drink prices in the resort, even for soft drinks, are very high compared to the bars and restaurants in Grand Baie which is just 5 minutes walk from the hotel. The lack of atmosphere in the Bay View Bar in the early evenings (We tended to eat early and so were ready for an after dinner drink between 7:30 and 9) meant we rarely used it preferring to venture further afield. The beach area is spacious and has plentiful sunbeds with lots of options for shade and there is a generous section of roped off swimming area with lots of water sports included in the price of the package. As the hotel fronts onto the lagoon there is little in the way of waves and the water isn't as fresh as that just round the corner at the public Curvette beach which sits beyond the mouth of the lagoon and is well worth the 5 minute amble along the beach. Snorkelling from the beach is possible but there isn't much to see but as there are daily snorkelling trips to the nearby reef area this isn't a problem. One thing we noticed is the continuous maintenance of standards and cleanliness at the resort which underscores an evident pride in the property from the management all the way through the entire staff. Special mention to the concierge staff who were delightful and very helpful especially Evy who went above and beyond to make our stay special. We've stayed in places where this is not the case and is really makes a difference. We stayed here in the low season for Mauritius and another thing to note is that the character of the place changes from midweek to weekends as the hotel offers discount packaged to local families in an attempt to fill out the resort in the off season on Saturdays and Sundays. The place doesn't become particularly noisy or boisterous but there is definitely a change in the tone of the place and the pool and restaurant are more crowded. Overall we were extremely happy with the Mauricia Beachcomber and would have no hesitation recommending the resort to anyone wanting a stylish and relaxing holiday in a beautiful location - just some tweaks to warm up the public areas to generate a bit of atmosphere and set the drink prices to a more reasonable level.

The Hotel has a well maintained and huge complex .Its location is very good with nice waterfront in the Grand Baie area .We stayed for 4 nights in a beachfront room . It had a nice sea view which we used to enjoy . Cleanliness was ok , but the room toilet needs improvement . Breakfast was very good with enough choice . Dinner food was somewhat bland and deserves to be made tasty . The Hotel staff were friendly and helpful .

I stayed in one of the standard rooms, which is very well-equipped and beautifully decorated. The buffet has something for everyone, and the staff are so helpful. Beautiful view of the bay! Also it's walking distance from the town for shopping outings.

We spent 4 nights with my wife and two kids. We were really very happy with the quality of service offered. The staff is exceptional- really taking care of their clients. In addition the kindness of the general manager made the difference, he was very closed to his customers and made sure that everyone is comfortable. I strongly recommend this resort. Thank you
