Nepenthe is conveniently located near the Arenal volcano National Park with great views of both the volcano and lake arenal. Beautiful gardens surround the various living quarters. Breakfast was fresh, tasty, and varied, cooked and served by wonderful people. Joel, Po, and the rest went out their way to explain and give tours of the property. The Oropendola house would be ideal for a large group reunion or small wedding. We will definitely visit again and bring friends and family members.

I wont repeat much of what has already been said below. Transport to the location is a challenge, its not five star accommodation but if you accept that, there is so much to savour at this unique place. Wildlife is all around and a marvel. We saw toucans, snakes (friendly ones), howler monkeys, huge moths, and all kinds of hummingbirds and butterflies. The staff are helpful and Gordon and Nancy are seasoned hosts with lots of fascinating stories to tell. Enjoy the panoramic views of the lake and swim in the well cared for pool in the pretty gardens. While there is a slight feeling of being out on a limb, the alternative (staying in La Fortuna) would be far worse. Finally a big shout out to Juan and Luisa at the Phoenix restaurant - perfect hosts and unfailingly polite. Please eat there! The food is awesome!

I stayed here with family and had a wonderful time. We stayed in the casitas, which were spacious and comfortable with everything we needed for cooking our own meals. We did go down to the restaurant occasionally, especially for cocktails, and the food was tasty. The breakfasts were the best though with pancakes, pineapple jam, eggs and pinto gallo, of course. It was truly magical sipping coffee and looking at the amazing views of Lake Arenal.

Everyone who worked there was awesome, the food was great, the service was good and stuff like that but the house needed to be updated. The house looked like it would be cool in 2003 (that is the year it was built), now that is is 2019 you seem to notice the things like some switches only turn on when other ones are on, bathrooms and kitchen needed to be updated, the dishwasher was falling out of the cabinet and some rooms needed to be cleaned, the roof was leaking and the bed was moldy due to the leak. But the views were spectacular, and the outdoor seating space was very comfortable. Also every day a person named Toto would come out with his machete and cut the grass and trim the plants and clean the dead grass, I got to give it to him, he was good at his job. We were in the main house and we heard great things about the hotels being nice. Enjoy costarica!

The reviews I read were accurate: this place is a little bit of a challenge to reach, but if you have a four-wheel drive and take your time, it's doable! I would agree that the first time you drive there, make it during daylight hours. The grounds are so lovely that you could just stay there all day, especially if you are a bird watcher. No need to go on big hikes, my first morning there I saw a crested guan, 2 types of toucans, oropendulas, hummingbirds, and tons of other colorful birds we don't have in Massachusetts. Walking up to the top of the hill, I also heard howler monkeys in the distance. The staff (we saw mostly the 'tres jotas' - Joel, Jose and Juan) are really friendly and helpful. They speak English but patiently humoured me when I tried to practice my broken Spanish. The can book tours for you and I highly recommend the Mistico Hanging Bridges park with a guide. However we were disappointed with the kayak on the lake they recommended (Marcos, Pescador Arena). The restaurant Phoenix on the premises was good, and it's super convenient to have this establishment at Nepenthe, so that you don't have to go back down and back up the steep rocky road at night. Our "room", really a small house just to ourselves, was lovely and suited us fine. I was surprised that there was only one bed, I thought I had asked for 2, or at least a bed and a fold-out sofa. I'm wondering if this house (Number 11) used to be the blue lagoon spa that I saw on the website, because it is attached to the covered area with the hot tub (a bit too hot!) and massage table, plus some games. It had a very large room in addition to the bedroom- this room was practically empty save a small table and 2 chairs. There was a wooden couch frame on the back porch, which made us think maybe there used to be a sleeping couch in that room ?? There was a kitchenette with some dishes and a coffee maker, fridge and microwave, and sink, and a cool bathroom with a terrarium of sorts in the shower, that was open to the sky so the plants would get watered by rain! I was concerned about the lack of screen on that opening, but we didn't see or were bothered by mosquitoes at all. Another porch on the garden side had two wooden rocking chairs where we could observe the multitude of birds visiting the flowers. This lodging was nice, could have been better with some comfy seating in the house, and those rocking chairs were not super comfortable if you sat there long. A lovely addition would be the hanging chairs that they had by the breakfast room. Indeed, we could walk up to the main building and enjoy those chairs anytime, so we took advantage of that. The infinity pool is a delight, rain or shine. Breakfast was different every day, plentiful and tasty. The view is gorgeous, with the lake and mountains, and even the volcano on the other side. Don't forget to pack a flashlight, it gets pretty dark at night, especially the night we lost power for a couple of hours. There were candles in a drawer, but no matches or candlesticks! No TV in our house, but we didn't miss that at all. I would definitely stay there again.
