    • Decent Hotel, but I won't be rushing back

The Novotel Avista in Kata is a good but not great hotel, but during the low season the price was pretty attractive, so I think it is worth the price. The place is an older hotel (formerly the Avista) on top of a very steep hill on the North end of Kata beach. The rooms are big and in decent shape, and the bed was comfortable but the phones are really cheap, and some of the TV channels mysteriously dropped out after 3 days, and the control panels for the lights and air conditioners popped out of the wall, so be aware, this is by no means a new hotel. I was on the top floor, and had an unremarkable view over the pool and could see a bit of the ocean in the distance. It is a 5 to 10 minute walk down the hill and around a corner to get to the beach, which, it must be said, is very nice. The North end of Kata is dominated by the Club Med, so there are no bars or restaurants on the beach there, but the beach itself is wide, clean and quite nice. The food at the Novotel Avista was frankly pretty mediocre, with a limited breakfast buffet they offered for 250 baht, which is pretty cheap, so I guess you get what you pay for. I had lunch their one day and the food was ok, but quite overpriced. The other issue is that you have to walk down the monster hill to get to the restaurants on the main road in Kata, and at the North end of town, there are not really many good options. The South end of the beach has better food options, but that is a 200 baht tuk tuk ride unless you want to walk for 15 to 20 minutes. The pool area of the hotel is pretty nice, and the staff was all friendly and helpful, so the hotel has that going for it. Anyway, if you want a great high end resort, not sure the Novotel fits the bill, but it is a decent enough, not too expensive place.
