    • The worst homestay of Vietnam

We booked the homestay with five days in advance for 2 people. We chose it for the good price of the room (480,000 VND on booking) and especially because the owner spoke good English. When we arrived, we met a lady who did not understand any English, and with whom we communicated through Google Translate. She accompanied us to the room, and we asked for meals (we were interested in dinner and breakfast) to what she said would be cheaper there than anywhere in the surrounding area. As she had no men, we asked her for dinner and breakfast. Dinner consisted of two plates of spaghetti with vegetables and four pieces of veal (not too good), a plate of spring rolls (which we had not ordered) and two beers. The next day we had two bowls of chicken noodles and two coffees. At the time of paying the bill ... surprise: she wanted to charge us, for everything, 1,380,000 VND (750,000 the room, 400,000 VND the dinner, and 230,000 VND the breakfast). We told her that wasnt the price of the room we had reserved, and that the price of breakfast did not match with offered in booking (VND 45,000 per person). From this moment she start making excuses, saying that we had stayed in a deluxe room (which we had not asked for or booked) and said the breakfast was special, so it was more expensive. We don't even talk about dinner ... the most expensive, bad and shabby of the whole trip. We ask for the accommodation price letter and she tells us that she does not have it, and the invoice she presents to us is a paper handwritten by her. After refusing to pay, several times, any price above what was booked in booking, she tells us that she had never had clients like us, and finally agrees to charge us the price of booking in the room and breakfast (dinner we finally pay at she asked us, since we had no reference). In short: staff and unreliable prices, which has tried to scam us. TO AVOID!!!

I am a returning customer, I came the first time 4 years ago and I was quite please with my stay. I decided to come back. Full disappointment, the place is now dirty, old, overpriced and highly unfriendly. The staff does not speak a word of English. We also had a hard time getting our passport back. They are only trying to get your money. The breakfast is also terrible and overpriced. You can find anywhere in the city a better place for half the price.

We are very very disappointed. This place should definitely not be mentioned in the LP. We arrived this morning to this area and walked with our backpacks. Arriving here I asked if I could see the room. An old lady who does not understand even a single word english showed me quickly the room, but did not let me enter. The place did not smell mouldy and did have windows (which I can't say from some other places nearby) so I bargained a bit better price, which was really hard because the old lady understands nothing and just kept repeating (with an translator app) that for sure this is the best and cheapest place to stay. When I wanted to leave she agreed to the lower price... So far ok... We had to take off our shoes and after leaving our passports, having a look at the breakfast menu (quite expensive) and talking about the motorbike rent (of course also best and cheapest) we were allowed to go to the room while she prepared our so called 'breakfast'. For me pancakes (very yellow and very weird taste) and my partner scrambled eggs (one small egg) with toast (2slices, one yellow one reddish). After 2weeks vietnam this was far out the worst breakfast we had. I tried some of it but just could not eat it. While having breakfast in the garden, waving off dogs cats and mosquitoes I saw a thick on the floor. We killed it with a stick, accepted the too-expensive motorbike and set off to Dong Hoi to get food and plan our trip, since here obviously no one could explain anything about tours, getting bus or train tickets or whatever kind of question. I asked for our passports and after discussing a while, without understanding a word, she finally gave 1 of our 2 passports. Leaving the homestay we also had to leave her the room key. Entering the room and having a closer look, the room is very dirty. Yellow stains on the bed, stains on the bedside table and walls. The bathroom (tiny, you have to shower between the toilet and sink, and broken towel and toiletpaper holders, walls never get cleaned, the dust sticks to the walls and amenities. There is no mini bar, but on the bedside table there are some hot beers, coke and water (again too expensive) and some vietnamese written paper about tours... In the room, so far I found a few spiders, cockroaches, a street of ants and an gecko, hope the list doesn't get longer. So yes, disappointment is an understatement.

Had a single room on the first floor. This is not for someone who is seeking a five star experience. This is a basic, inexpensive accommodation for travelers who want to visit the Dong Hoi area and have access to the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park with its magnificent caves. Service provided by the staff and ownership was excellent. Meals are available in a delightful garden setting.
