    • We had to wait more than 2 hours to get our room!!!!

      Reviewed 24 August 2019

We booked a room way in advance. Arrived here before 2pm. Receptionist said we had to wait til after 3pm to get our room. It's now past 4pm, and we don't have our room yet. They gave us a couple of welcome drink coupons to compensate for our trouble. The receptionist even suggested that maybe we can go swimming while waiting. The gall of these people. "Five star hotel" my a**!!!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!!!

    • This is not a family friendly hotel

      Reviewed 07 August 2019

I checked in today and am dreading the remainder of my pre-paid 4 night stay. I live in China and decided to visit Xiamen, stay in this hotel which overlooks Gulangyu island, as a staycation for my wedding anniversary having read up on trip advisor and having checked out the facilities and location on the hotel website. I have 2 young boys (1.5 years and 4 years) so when booking any hotel I check carefully that it has the amenities I need including a swimming pool and play room so that mum and dad can accompany the boys and keep them happy on holiday. I decided to splash it cash and book an executive suite (which was advertised as having space for 2 kids 2 adults, with a sofa bed for big kids and free baby cot available for younger kids), the plus was it looked super spacious and had a separate living room so me and my husband could chill at night and watch a movie while the boys slept. So far the whole experience has been a nightmare, a total financial drain and a massive disappointment. On check in (which took over 30 minutes in the exec lounge - would have been ok albeit for grumpy baby) we were shown to our executive suite suite with city view to see that our city view was in fact an active building site. Massive disappointment. The room is tiny, do not book this room for anything other than a couple. There is no space! Then, to see that no baby cot had been arranged in the room (I called the hotel twice before arrival and requested by email and was told it would be done) and no bed for my older son and was set up either was just plain annoying. With the kids getting itchy my husband said hed take the kids to play while I went to see if we could sort out the room issues. After 2 hours of back and fourth it seemed the hotel were unable to accommodate a family of 4 in an exec suit included in the per night room price I had paid. The only resolution was for us to pay an additional 350 + RMB a night (40) for a roll out bed for my 4 year old (which when delivered was in atrocious condition and completely worn out and dirty). I found this absolutely appalling. In the interim, my husband had called to say that him and my children were unable to use the play room as there was an additional charge of 100 RMB per hour (12 per hour per child) to use this hotel facility. I have stayed in a large number of 5* hotels across Asia and have NEVER, as a paying hotel guest, ever experienced being charged extra to utilise family facilities. When I questioned this I was told if you eat at the hotel restaurant kids can play 3 hours for free. What a farce; I paid over 1000 RMB (120) a night to stay here and I cant access the play room, instead Im expected to front MORE money to eat at the restaurant. Ridiculous! I booked this hotel on the provision of the facilities for children, all of which it appears need to be paid in addition. I was further informed that what you see online is just a guide : I disagree wholeheartedly. I book hotels 100% on their provisions and I booked this one as it seemed to have great facilities for my kids included in the room fee. After having started the check in process at 2.30pm, it was now 5pm. We decided to go to the pool which staff were delighted to tell us was free; its not hard to see why. The pool area stank of urine, patrons were spitting into the drains surrounding the pool site openly with life guards saying nothing; totally unhygienic. The pool water itself was freezing, totally unsuitable for children. The baby pool was tiny and shaped like a cloud which in theory looked cute but leaves multiple sharp edges at the head height of children who would play here. Massive safety issue. Add to this that the floor surrounding the pool is slate and extremely slippy when wet so massively unsafe for adults, let alone children. The changing areas were no better, with no additional towels being provided and the tiled floors having no mats, resulting in adults and children slipping constantly. Absolute safety hazard. Long story short, it seems what you pay for when booking a room here is a basic level of service provision only. EVERYTHING else is extra! I have never, ever experienced this with a 5* hotel before and have been left disgusted and appalled. I would recommend that families stay away from this hotel. It is not suitable unless you want to pay extortionate prices for the basic provisions that you expect. I must add at this point that the ladies and gents in the exec lounge, although unable to help us in any way with our complaints, except to accept more money from us, were kind and provided good lounge service. The views of Gulangyu are stunning but is this worth the hassle and extra money....No! Disappointing is an understatement!

    • view of Gulangyu, convenient location, left my blouse, great service!

We stayed one night in this hotel last week. It was a pleasant stay as the room was quite big and had a wonderful view of Gulangyu island. Very convenient as the ferry ride back from Gulangyu was very close by and after that we walked to Zhongshan Lu to have some local Xiamen food before walking back to the hotel. I also forgot my blouse in the closet after we checked out and called the hotel. They were very helpful and arranged courier service to send back the blouse to my friend's place in Jinjiang, where we went. I would definitely come back to Xiamen and stay here again. Next time i would go to the Lounge and have breakfast and enjoy the view!
