    • Amazing day!!

This was a TUI Collection trip and although the start was very early, 6.10am!! (Arrgghhh!)and lasted all day(' til dusk) it was well worth the effort! We visited Redonda Mountain (round mountain) for a light breakfast and then to Canitas to catch a speed boat to Cayo Levantado( Bacardi Island!)which was stunningly beautiful. After a lovely lunch we hopped on two boats again and headed to the National Park where we visited two huge caves once inhabited by the Taino people. Getting on the boats again we then went around the coast where we saw frigate birds, pelicans and other wildlife. Finally we headed into the mangroves and then caught up with the coach to go back to the hotel. This trip fulfilled all my dearest wishes and was one of the best days of my life! The tour guide Joel was excellent and you are so well looked after throughout. I would highly recommend TUI Collection trips! You definitely won't be disappointed!

We enjoyed the organized day trip to Los Haitises National Park. We spent most of the day on the boat and toured around the rocks, caves and visited a cave with petroglyphs. I wish there was more focus on birds and bird watching, as it seems to be a paradise for birds, we noticed a few species. A trip to the park is probably one of the top, if not the top option in the Samana area.

We (family of four, including two seven year old children) travelled from Bayahibe to get to Los Haitises. 6am pick up with four hours on a bus travelling through the hills and having the opportunity to view the life of the Dominican Republic community very quickly through the window of the bus. The first stop we jumped onto a boat and travelled peacefully through the mangrove forest where the roots grow incredibly long trying to reach the water. We then hopped onto a catamaran and had Prosecco before we jumped into the water for a swim. There were huge crabs and fish that met us as we swam, along with some rubbish including a huge broken bottle that I almost trod on. The guide did inform us that there was work to be done to educate people not to litter the waters - this was evident during the trip because although the land was beautiful and in many instances deserted, there was still some rubbish to be found that had washed up to the side in places. We visited some caves where there was some wonderful cave art to be found. The guide said the art was at least 500 years old but I've read on some websites that they could be over 1,000 years old. Once out of the caves there are plenty of birds to be found, the most obvious being the pelican, there are loads of them swopping around. A wonderful sight! The lunch served up on the remote island stop off was pasta, potatoes, chicken and fish. There was nothing fancy about it but that was perfect as it tasted great and suited the environment we were in. Be careful where you tread on the island as there is section that was covered with crabs. It was a shame when people stomped through and squashed a number of them. I also noticed some people trying to catch crabs where they managed to pull a few claws off in the process. Such a shame! There are hammocks and loungers available to relax on and a pirate ship to view (you don't get to go on this). After the food we took a speedboat around the area to get a final view of everything before we headed back onto land and back onto the bus. All in all we spent 5 hours on the trip with 4 hours either side travelling (obviously this depends on where you are coming from). My advice is to take plenty of suncream as it gets really hot there. It's a great trip out, the guide was lovely, the land was lovely (just watch out for the rubbish/broken glass). This trip will give you a true insight into a beautiful country.

It is a nice boat trip to the park, but beware it might be colder on the water especially if it rains. You travel around the coast and the guide is very well versed in geology, ecology and history making this trip most interesting and culturally worth it. The captain takes the boat on a very shallow and narrow river in the mangrove up to a dock. A two minute walk will bring you to the cave where there are petroglyphes. Again, our guide's knowledge was impressive, we did learn a lot about the country and it's history. Well worth the price!

I really loved visiting the mangroves and the caves and would like to learn more about the petroglyphes and drawings but the boat trip to get there was really awful for me. Departure was Samana Bay and we were in the boat for more than an hour on bumpy sea. I didn't expect a so long boat trip so if you are sea sick be aware of that and take a pill lol.
