    • Acs 17 - Paul the Apostle gives his account of Areopagus

Electrifying to see this intersection of biblical history and archeology. The Apostle Paul's words are inscribed on a plaque at the hill base. He looked up at the Acropolis and said, "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands." 2,000 years ago. Just amazing.

It's worth taking the walk upon this rock just to see the view over Athens, and free of charge as well.

We loved hearing the history behind this spot. Be sure you take the guided tour. This is a historic site so the ground is not very level so keep this in mind.

We went out of our way to go to Mars Hill and see the place where the Apostle Paul preached to the Athenians. While there we met other believers from Australia (we're from Canada).

We're staying within a short walk of the Acropolis area, so, as someone who has spent a fair amount of time studying the work of the Apostle Paul, I definitely added in a stop at this extraordinary spot. They've marked it pretty well, including a plaque with his sermon written in Greek. It's proximity to the Acropolis makes it convenient and adds to the enjoyment of the views. It's not necessarily an easy place to experience. They have added a metal staircase, which is nice, because the carved stone steps are steep, high, and smoothed out by extensive use. There are some areas that are relatively even and flat for walking, but a great deal of the hill top is uneven, and again very smooth and potentially slippery. Unfortunately there are areas with graffiti painted on the rocks, and a fair amount of rubbish left lying around. That being said, in light of its historical significance with respect to Athenian life, including the episode recounted in the Scriptures when Paul was brought there to explain his teaching, it's well worth the time to visit. Be prepared for a lot of company; there hasn't been a moment when the hill top has been visible to me that it hasn't been covered with travelers.
