Experience World-class Service at YHA Ambleside

The YHA Ambleside sits on the shores of Lake Windermere in the Lake District. It offers a range of budget accommodation, a café serving local food, and self-catering facilities. After being refurbished, the property now boasts newly decorated rooms, a new restaurant and a decked terrace with lake views. The comfortable TV lounge and some of the dorms and bedrooms have views across both the lake and the Langdale Pikes. There is a selection of books for guests to borrow. Laundry facilities are also provided. The bar offers a range of local ales and there is a large garden with plenty of seating. There are many walking and cycling routes surrounding YHA Ambleside, and there is a bike store on site. A variety of watersports can be enjoyed on the lake and guests can buy tickets for lake cruises and mountain goat tours at reception. Ambleside village is a 10-minute walk from the YHA hostel. It has a selection of quaint tea rooms, artisan shops and country pubs. The majority of rooms contain bunk beds.

Beautiful hostel right on the lake, lovely warm welcome and very clean throughout. Had a fantastic stay at this hostel, The location was perfect to explore the lakes and surrounding area, parking was limited but use of a car park a few minutes walk away overcome this.

    • I like this hostel but...

I want to be able to give this hostel more than 3 stars, I really do. It has so much potential. It occupies an amazing location on the lake and 20 minutes walk from the centre of Ambleside, it has a lovely bar (although I've not eaten there, only had a drink or three) and the shared communal areas are well equipped and clean. The rooms are where it falls down. From experience, some are better than others and if you're lucky you may even get a fabulous lake view to wake up to. However, a lot of the rooms in this hostel are somewhat run down. Old peeling woodchip wallpaper which needs replacing as opposed to just painting over (you can see it has been again and again). The room we had this time had a velux window which wouldn't close too. Thankfully it didn't rain! The walls are pretty thin so bring ear plugs of you're a light sleeper as people bare rarely quiet between 11 and 7 as the hostel request them to be. We had a room next to the toilet on this occasion and every time the hand drier was used overnight I got woken up it was so loud through the wall which is a shame. Speaking of the toilets they were kept clean by the staff and that's a credit to them to be honest as there were some pretty feral guests leaving some disgusting messes in there but they were cleaned several times a day. I hope that this place soon gets the proper renovation it deserves, not just a kick of paint. Will I visit again, perhaps but for the price they charge particularly on a weekend, I expect more than peeling wallpaper and sticky banisters.

I've stayed at this hostel on so many occasions in recent years that it now feels really familiar. Staff are great and the communal spaces are excellent. If you've never stayed at a hostel before, YHA Ambleside is a great choice for a beginner. Highly recommended!
